Kent's Platform

In Kansas, schools are the backbones of our communities. However, due to various issues related to funding, transportation, teacher retention, and special education needs, we are seeing rural Kansas schools struggling and even shutting down. Kent aims to work closely with local school districts as well as with state officials to ensure that public funding stays in our school districts, so that they may continue to thrive and support our youth. Kent has plans for enriching our public districts by supporting local economies and helping schools take steps to produce their own sustainable energy and participate in revenue sharing through demand response markets.

Helping Rural Schools Keep the Lights on

Freedom of Expression for Kansas
Teachers and Students

Throughout the state, our teachers are consistently being constrained due to bans on books and classroom materials, dashing our students’ exploration of topics related to diversity, gender, and race. As a member of the State Board of Education, Kent aims to prevent the further banning of books from our high schools. He will also assure that teachers can present tough topics about identity and history without worrying about their job security.

We are seeing a rise in the prevalence of mental health issues among Kansas teens. Kansas is presently ranked last out of all 50 states in terms of access to mental health resources. As a member of the State Board of Education, Kent will work closely with the Kansas Legislature as they expand mental health access to students in the state. Additionally, Kent aims to adapt our schools’ health curricula to include up-to-date information on mental health.

Addressing Mental Health Issues
Among Kansas Students

Kent wants all schools in Kansas to be secure, welcoming environments for our students and personnel, regardless of race/color, ethnicity, religion, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, disability, etc. He will see to it that voices and faces of all paths of life are heard and seen in our educational system.
